Tool to check if you have the right cell plan

The NYT ran an article stating that most cell phone users should not migrate to so called unlimited plans. Thats all very interesting and well worth a read however what was more interesting in the article was a reference to a new online tool from a company Validas (see link below) that will automatically import your bill from any of the major carriers and analyze it to see if you could save money by switching plans. WOW. Check it out and let me know what you think. Talk about a great tool.

Think Twice About Unlimited Calling Plans – Bucks Blog – NYTimes.com.

So what is this thing that Cisco calls “call preservation” on the iPhone?

Cisco today previewed new features coming to its Mobile Voice application for the iPhone. While Cisco is careful not to call it multitasking, a feature sorely lacking on the iPhone, the company is adding a “call preservation” feature to its iPhone app.

The update is due out either late next month or by April. Cisco said the call preservation feature keeps a call connected even if you switch to another iPhone application.

I will be very interested to see what this actually means. I mean if Apple is allowing Cisco to implement this form of multitasking which up till now has only been allowed for system applications such as mail, native voice or iPOD why not others like Truphone or Skype.

Which iPad 3G Data Plan Should You Buy?

Ever wondered which 3G plan you should buy. This article in Silicon Valley Insider gives you the best guide I have seen in a while. I must say during our last trip to South Africa I purchased a 3G 250 MB plan from Vodacom and did not use it all during the 2-1/2 weeks were in country. That being said I was not streaming and for a good portion of the time I had access to a Wifi connection.

See below for a good guide.

Study Finds That Reduced Phone Use Does Not Cut Crashes – Wheels Blog – NYTimes.com

I really thought there was a lesson here. Too often in both life and especially business are decisions made based on what somebody thinks or believes when in fact there is no empirical evidence to backup that decision. See the case in point below. However I have seen over and over again where individuals install rules or make huge decisions based on nothing more than a hunch.

My first thoughts on the iPad

Update: iPad has GPS so long as you buy the 3G enabled device.

I would say I like it 80%. So first the 20% of why I don’t like it. No multi tasking. The reason being that it eliminates the ability for online collaboration while reviewing documents or interaction between multiple participants during gaming etc. This is s critical mistake. I understand they did it to protect battery life and enable the 10 hours they claim but I believe this choice should have been left to the user and not mandated by Apple. No GPS as far as I can work out. I mean come on what does not have GPS these days. Everything is location based or tagged. Even digital camera’s are arriving on shelves GPS enabled. So now I am sitting in a coffee shop and I can’t broadcast where I am so my friends can find me. Ok not my cup of tea but from the growth of all things Foursquare this was another major error. No camera. How did they not put a front facing camera into this thing. I mean come on Apple. You were the guys that put a camera into ever notebook before they were called notebooks. Get a life. I mean so that means no Skype video. You know the rest.

Why I like it sort of.

10 hours of battery life. Very cool. Great tool to surf and read e-mail. I am assuming that the mail client has all the required capabilities. However there are a few unknowns here. Does it give you the ability to have more than one user. Does it have the ability to have more than one mail account. What about logging in and out. What about different browsers like Firefox. Do I have to use Safari? I did not see anything that said I could. This immediately restricts the usefulness of the device. Pictures great. Bluetooth great. watching movies great. No Adobe Flash bad. That immediately means no Hulu. Big bad.

I think there are alot of unknowns out there still. We will have to watch and see as the reviews come out.

Oh was that last paragraph why I liked it or was it was it why I sort of liked it but had more questions than answers.

The Secret Diary of Steve Jobs: Why the mainstream media is dying

I will be the first to admit that the blogisphere is not always the best place to get your news. There are plenty of examples which I don’t have time to detail here where the blogisphere has got it wrong but I think you will agree if you read the posting below that in this particular case Techcrunch got it right. Daniel Lyons aka Fake Steve makes some very good points about the challenges traditional journalism faces in the new world of online publishing. I personally find that more and more the technology news pushed out by traditional outlets like the New York Times and Wall Street Journal is simply old hat. In a way the NYT’s has acknowledged this by running blog RSS feeds on their Technology page as has the WSJ. Read the article and let me know what you think.

Google Apps Will Get Stronger Video Chat Capabilities – NYTimes.com

Now we are talking. If they do indeed add multi party chat to Google Apps I can see loads of people deciding this might be worth jumping in. I mean one to one is fine but lets face it multi party is where it is at. I do find myself wondering however what kind of overhead this will require. Apple ichat has had this capability for a while and requires some pretty heavy overhead. Time will tell I guess what the boys at Google come up with.
